Formerly Hotel Oxford, the Hotel Metropolis is housed in a landmark building on the corner of Turk and Mason Streets, a classic example of colonial revivalist architecture from the 1930's.
Colum McCartan, from United Designers, has used its unique location just off Market Street as an inspiration for the loosely attributed theme of Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. All the forces of nature as it were, gathered at the geographical heart of San Francisco, on the expanding edge of the Downtown Hotel District.
Each of the 20 floors of guest rooms has been designated with earth, wind, fire, or water which is immediately recognizable from the colors of doors, rooms numbers and architectural graphics: aquamarine for water, sunburst yellow for fire, olive green for earth, and beige gray for wind.
